Breaking the Loop, Swimming in the City of Houston

The geographical boundaries of 610, better known by Houstonians as "The Loop" acts as an unofficial boundary for the City of Houston and its urban to suburban sprawl. Unfortunately, it also currently acts as an unofficial wall for swim programing spanning from youth lessons to college-prep training. Greater Houston is known as a hotbed of fast swimming and historically strong swim programs, but unfortunately most of that is in the suburbs of Houston. Currently, there are less than four swim programs that serve the specific areas of the inner loop and the HISD boundaries that are not satellite programs of a larger suburban-specific team. Of these, each have innate barriers of cost, private club membership, or reliance on county/city funding.

The goal of HTX Swims is to offer programming to the greater Houston area inside the loop and provide access to the diverse community of swimmers that live here. Offering programming at a large scale that is available to all is a priority, all while supporting existing HISD, private, and charter schools swim programs.

To HTX Swims, the sport of Swimming is:

  • An essential life-saving skill for all youth and adults.

  • A sport that promotes a healthy lifestyle that can be continued for a lifetime.

  • A sport that develops and rewards hardworking, skill building, goal setting and perseverance.

  • A sport that can be a conduit for both academic access and financial support at universities.

HTX Swims wants to offer the best and most comprehensive swim program "inside the loop". Our owner, Jason Wedlick, has spent the last 16 years supporting HISD and private schools and is well versed in the specific and unique challenges Houston students face navigating the journey from elementary to high school. HTX Swims will be offering programing at multiple locations for the fall of 2022.
